Mapping the "criminality" of bicycling

NYPD Video Surveillance

Month of Ride:

There are two things that you (yes you the one reading this) need to do.

The first is to read this blog entry on I-witness news
The second is to watch this past Monday's Democracy Now!

Eileen Clancy from I-Witness was on the show describing her work in fighting the NYPD's surveillance of lawful groups in New York City including Critical Mass.

Even though most of us know that the NYPD has done much worse,The footage is amazing! The misuse of resources is so flagrant and obnoxious. This is not why I pay taxes and this is not why I put my faith and trust in this country's Police officers.

I do truly trust and put my faith in the beat cops of Police Corps around this country; I have too they keep me safe. The Chiefs, lieutants and those in leadership positions, however, lose touch with reality and start targeting groups that pose no threat to security and misuse resources to deter activities that they deem "annoyances".

Critical Mass has never been considered a threat in any city. I have never been at a critical mass wherein riots resulted, people were shot, or crimes committed. Nonetheless the NYPD has targeted the Critical Mass rides and put them under terrorist level security.

Blimps, Helicopters, and hidden cameras have all been used on riders of Critical Mass. Lawful citizens exercising their right to freedom of assembly on the last friday of every month.

I remember my first Critical Mass ride in NYC, Feb. 2006. For no reason at all a police vehicle pulled up alongside me , pointed a video camera in my face for about 5-10 seconds and then drove off. No explanation, no identification, nothing. How was that legal??

The answer: It wasn't.

Please watch the episodes and read the stories on I-Witness then come to Critical Mass!!! (Last Friday of EVERY month, North side of Union Square)

If we don't take a stand against the NYPD's complete misuse of resources who will?

See you this friday!
